THIRD MIND

Installation & Live Performance   |   2013

Three musicians perform in a dimly lit room. Two uses a laptop and mixer, while the other plays drums. A large screen displays abstract visuals. Energetic atmosphere.

Third Mind premiered at CCA Glasgow and received an Alt-W Award from New Media Scotland

Created by composer Matthew Collings and visual artist Erik Parr, Third Mind is an interactive audio-visual app, performance and installation that explores the idea of algorithmic cinema.

The project is an interactive space that combines cinema, music, foley and performance. It features Matthew (guitar, electronics, prepared amplifier, live foley),  Erik (visual processing) and Christos Michalakos (percussion, electronics).

Developed with support from New Media Scotland and Cryptic

A multi-projection video installation combined with live musical performance. Inspired by the idea of a film that never ends, the piece abstracts elements of cinema into immersive formal experiences.

A custom software system generatively controls the video and sound composition in real-time, each changing its content in response to the other.

During the performance, multiple video projections respond to live musical performance in a hypnotic exploration of motion and sound.

A person playing a percussion instrument with a wooden stick and metal wires, dimly lit in purple light, creating a mysterious and atmospheric mood.
A pair of feet in dark boots stand on a tray filled with small white stones, casting shadows in low light. The mood is mysterious and somber.

"A strange and quite stimulating thing… a digitally-distressed garble ricocheting around our heads in surround sound… until image and audio were a hypnotic blur"
